Along Camino
Project Overview
Project Details
As part of a design course at my university, I was tasked with creating a magazine article based on a article we were given. I was originally given an article about the woman who created the weighted blanket industry, however later had to change the design due to complications.
Design Goals
Design a 2 spread layout for a magazine related to the article given.
Design must work well with the article given and draw the audience into reading it.
Results
Created a mock up for a Camino De Santiago based article for National Geographic.
Role:
Lead Designer
Timeline:
Completed in 1 month, never printed.

Discovery of Design Problem
This project had no client outside of my professor, so there was not a clear design problem. We were tasked with a text based story and told to design a magazine based on the story.
Design Process
Initial Concepts
While the story was interesting, I struggled to come up with a design that was not text heavy. This option was my favourite of the two designs, however once it reached the feedback stage both my peers and my professor pointed out it needed a lot more interest in the overall design.

Design Pivot
At the halfway point in the project, I knew I would not be able to create a layout and magazine design that could do this article justice and show my professor my skills in design. If this was for a real client, I would work with them to get or take the images I needed to present the best article layout possible, however that was not the case for this project. So I reached out to my professor and asked if I could work with a different article.
Early in the semester I had gone on the Camino de Santiago and had done a photo journal while abroad. After vetting a National Geographic Blog for the Camino de Santiago, my professor allowed me to work with this article to create the final design, but made it clear that it had to be a strong design to compensate the fact that I moved away from the original project description.
Choosing Camino

Immediately this design was a lot stronger and after a second round of feedback, there was only a few typography and image placement revisions to make.

Final Design
After making the final adjustments this was my final spread design for the Camino de Santiago Magazine.

All images in the Camino Magazine Design were taken by me, and you can find the full collection on my Photography Porfolio linked on the about page.
Results
The results for this project are difficult to judge since it never was published as an offical magazine. However, as a school project it recieved high marks for the overall design.
